Associate Director Production Analytics

Production Analytics is a multidisciplinary group where all members have a deep knowledge of sports, statistics, databases, programming logic and languages, and storytelling. Combining best-in-the-industry data with advanced mathematics and statistical modeling skills, Production Analytics has created storytelling tools and metrics that have improved the evaluation of team and player performance, such as Total QBR and power ratings for college football, college basketball and soccer. These products make fans better informed and help keep ESPN at the cutting edge of sports statistical analysis.

The Associate Director of Analytics will have three core responsibilities: 1) as part of the Analytics leadership team, determine and oversee the creation of new performance metrics and tools, 2) oversee the Analytics Team?s quick-turnaround storytelling contributions and content-generation for current events and breaking news, and 3) review our content and provide examples of what we are doing well and how we can improve in making the comprehensive, digestible for our internal clients and fans.

The Associate Director will identify new sports analytics project opportunities and partner with the Analytics Director to prioritize projects. The Associate Director will determine objectives and define scope and scale of projects. The Associate Director will work with ESPN Technology and Digital partners to ensure that the proper resources are available and determine target dates. The Associate Director will be responsible for the execution of project work.

The role of the Associate Director is more than just project oversight. The Analytics Team is required to turn this information into language that allows integration into storytelling across all ESPN platforms, including TV and digital. Translating the complex into understandable language is a key component. The Associate Director must be a clear communicator and a subject-matter expert on the new metrics and insights they provide. The Associate Director will be responsible for internal education and evangelism of the metrics and tools developed by the Analytics Team. This includes developing the strategy and planning for introduction and training classes within the Stats & Information Group and production leaders; including on-air talent and writers.

Candidates need to have a background is sports quantitative analysis. A portfolio of successful analytics projects and metrics developed and supervised is necessary to be considered for this position. Experience working for a sports team or sports media organization in a leadership position is preferred.

The Associate Director needs the ability to represent the Stats & Information Group (SIG) in discussions with ESPN and industry senior leaders. The Associate Director would be part of SIG?s management team and would likely be responsible for 1-3 direct reports. The Associate Director needs to demonstrate the ability to fill duties normally reserved for the Director when necessary.

Demonstrated ability to regularly produce ideas on areas of opportunity within sports analytics for ESPN
Responsibilities
Help set the direction of the department by partnering with Analytics leadership to set project priorities Responsible for internal education of the metrics and tools developed by the Analytics Team, including but not limited to developing the strategy and planning for introduction and training classes within the Stats & Information Group and production leaders, on-air talent and writers, implementing strategic training plan, and evaluating additional opportunities for further education among internal teams. Identify the key components in these complex formulas and turn them into language that allows them to be readily used in storytelling across ESPN platforms Work with ESPN partners to ensure proper resource allocation and determine target dates for projects Educate other members of the SIG, as well as other members of the Production department, on Production Analytics storytelling tools Identify trends and react to news stories on a daily basis, using the new tools the Analytics Team develops, other products available to the Stats & Information team and tools available in the marketplace Lead the Analytics Team?s content review process Use strategic analytical approaches and techniques using data to answer sports questions
Requirements
Minimum of seven years? experience with sports analytics, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job
Minimum of two years? experience using predictive modeling, statistics, trend analysis, and other data analysis techniques
Minimum of two years of management experience
A passion for sports and statistics; candidates need to have a working knowledge of players, teams and the rules of the games
Effective communication and leadership skills
A thorough knowledge of sports statistical analysis in the marketplace
Strong sports knowledge, both historical and current
Additional Qualifications
Statistics, engineering, advanced mathematics or econometrics degree
Experience in statistical software such as R, STATA, SAS, etc.
Experience turning sports analytics into storylines
Experience working for a sports team or sports media company
Experience in digital and/or television sports production
Experience writing about sports analytics

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
